Design Development

Food scraps are often made when preparing food on the kitchen bench, so why isn’t the compost bin there with you? I wanted to create a beautiful product that was intuitive to use and simplified the act of composting. The idea was to make the bin level with the bench so food scraps could be easily swiped in, removing the act of travelling to the compost bin without using up bench space. It was important to design something that simplified composting to encourage more people to compost.

Measuring 3-5 days' worth of household compost.

Fabrication

The design is made with aluminium; however, I made the model using mild steel to make the fabrication process easier and quicker. This was my first time learning to fabricate with mild steel, being introduced to bending, sand-blasting, grinding and welding.
